Imagine that you are looking at yourself in a mirror that is not clean, it has dirt and maybe even cracks on it. The image looking back at you will be distorted; it will not look like the real you. Think of the spots of dirt and the cracks as the social conditioning, pain and the unmet needs that you might have experienced in your past. For me, counselling is similar to the process of cleaning the mirror; you will be able to see a more authentic you once you remove the spots of dirt. You can become aware of the cracks and how they formed and can learn to love yourself despite them. You can begin to see your story from a different perspective, and consciously begin to create the next chapters of your life.
What do you see when you look at yourself in a mirror? How do you feel about who you are, and where you are in your life right now? Is there anything that you would like to change, but something stops you from doing that? Are the relationships that you have in your life loving and supportive? The answers to these questions depend a lot on how much you love and accept yourself.
Loving and accepting yourself is not easy, especially if throughout your lifetime nobody showed you what that looks like. When that happens, you might go through life without being aware of your worth and your potential. You might struggle to connect with people and form meaningful relationships. You might feel unable to change old patterns of behaviour that make you feel stuck. You might not even know who you are anymore. You might feel powerless.
I will be by your side and guide you on your journey that takes you through your perceived identities and can lead you to your authentic self. I don’t see it as a process of creating a new you. I see it more as a process of re-discovering the real you, that is hiding deep underneath the issues that you might be struggling with like anxiety, co-dependency, pain, shame, anger, or low self-esteem.
You might find it hard to believe this right now, but you are filled with a lot of love, potential, creativity, and healing power. Your authentic self deserves to love and be loved.
